The above is an image of a bookmark showcasing the ban of the “The Joy of Gay Sex” in 1985. The book was imported to Toronto by Glad Day Bookshop Inc. in Boston and seized by Canadian customs. I believe this picture is a reminder of how far we’ve come in terms of censorship and freedom of speech. We should be incredibly proud of the progress we’ve made as a society with regards to hearing the voices of minorities, but also bear in mind that there is still work to be done. We shouldn’t take for granted how lucky we are to be in a part of the world which is increasingly tolerant of diverse perspectives.
