Short Blog 7 – Matchless Merchandise

The Spacing Store in 401 Richmond is a unique gift shop that opened in 2014. When you think of souvenirs from Toronto, what comes to mind immediately is probably a generic fridge magnet showcasing a famous landmark, but Spacing captures the true essence of the city with its unique merchandise. The store works with local artists and designers to sell a variety of products, including t-shirts, buttons, and magnets, which is a great way to support the city’s creative community. I find it refreshing how Spacing doesn’t just slap the CN tower onto a square of white fabric and call it a day. Instead, they make t-shirts showing people getting onto a streetcar or a raccoon looking through a trashcan, and candles with scents like “high park fresh cut grass.” It paints a better picture of the true Toronto for tourists and visitors. The store does an incredible job of representing not only the city but also its inhabitants by proudly advertising neighborhoods such as Cabbagetown and Kensington which might be overlooked. Below are some of their stand-out products:

The famous subway buttons, which showcases the TTC’s big part in most Torontonians’ lives.
A calendar with each month featuring a different image of Toronto and highlighting important events in Toronto’s history, such as the Yonge Subway Line opening on March 30 1954.
